On December 17, Radio Romania published an interview with Prof. Dr. Eng. Irina Mocanu, professor at the National University of Science and Technology POLITEHNICA Bucharest, and Senior Expert within the Romanian Artificial Intelligence Hub (HRIA).
In the interview, Prof. Irina Mocanu discussed the importance of the HRIA project.
We present a short excerpt from the interview with Professor Irina Mocanu: “HRIA is a support mechanism for increasing the visibility of Romanian research in AI and for helping develop real‑world applications, through a collaboration between universities and companies. In this way, research carried out within the university can be transferred into the economy, bringing an added layer of real applicability.
Within the project, applications will be developed across several domains: Medicine & Health, Environment, Smart Cities, Space, and Security.
In the laboratory where I work, we develop intelligent systems primarily with applicability in Medicine and Health. For example, we focus on the analysis of medical images (such as MRI, X‑rays, mammograms), which will ultimately help doctors make faster decisions and also understand why AI models provide a certain output — through what we call trustworthy artificial intelligence.
Another type of application, related to assistive systems, can support a user with health issues by integrating video‑based monitoring at home. For instance, if an incident such as a fall occurs, the system can alert a family member or designated contact. At the same time, this system can be integrated into the recovery process, allowing progress to be monitored, transmitted to the doctor for feedback, and enabling the user to see what they have done and what can be improved.
These applications will not replace specialized professionals; rather, they will support the people who care for elderly individuals.”
