The Institute of Artificial Intelligence of the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca brings together the main research laboratories in the field, including the Research Center for Image Processing and Pattern Recognition, the Intelligent Systems Laboratory, the Knowledge Engineering Laboratory, the Robotics and Nonlinear Control Laboratory, the Interactive and Nonlinear Control Laboratory for Distributed Systems, the Center and Research Laboratories in Robotics and Microelectronics.

The Artificial Intelligence research group within the Center for Research in Informatics – CeRiCS (research.info.uvt.ro; hpc.uvt.ro) at UVT has expertise in intelligent business, multi-agent systems, machine learning techniques and knowledge extraction from data.

Within the national and international projects carried out, the group has developed intelligent and scalable strategies for allocating resources in distributed systems, anomaly identification techniques, efficient processing platforms for data collected from sensors, deep learning-based models for processing satellite images, artificial vision models, explanatory neuro-symbolic models.

Application areas include medical imaging, intelligent environment, human-machine interfaces, cybersecurity, environmental and industrial process monitoring. TUIASI leverages in the Romanian Artificial Intelligence Hub a multidisciplinary team of researchers from 7 research/excellence centers and the infrastructures of the main laboratories in the field, such as Robotics and Intelligent Systems, Cloud Technologies, Big Data Applications and Internet of Things, Machine Learning and Internet of Things, Human-Computer Interaction, Autonomous Vehicles.

The researchers have key skills in machine and deep learning, artificial vision, biologically inspired algorithms, multi-agent systems, hardware neural networks and advanced simulations. The innovative solutions developed, based on AI technologies, cover a wide range of fields: smart/autonomous mobility, neuro-engineering, Industry 4.0, human-machine interfaces, assistive technologies, modeling and optimization of chemical processes, intelligent energy systems, etc.

At the educational level, TUIASI supports training in the field of AI through a solid portfolio of undergraduate courses and master’s programs within the Faculty of Automation and Computers. With a tradition of over a century, Politehnica University of Timișoara (UPT) has established itself as a pole of excellence in education and research in the fields of engineering and science. Over time, UPT has been a pioneer of technological innovation in Romania, being the institution that hosted the development of the first university computer in the country – MECIPT – and launched the first specialization in “Computers”. Starting with 2020, the university offers, for the first time in the country, a research-oriented master’s program in the field of Machine Learning, through which it annually trains approximately 50 specialists in machine learning. These initiatives highlight both the solid institutional heritage and the current commitment of UPT to technological progress, especially in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).

Research activity in AI is supported by specialized laboratories such as the Databases and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and the Intelligent Embedded Vision Laboratory, which bring together interdisciplinary teams of researchers with advanced skills in machine learning, deep learning, neural networks, vision, computational intelligence, embedded systems. For over two decades, GreenSoft SRL has been developing artificial intelligence solutions focused on critical infrastructure, health and transportation.

The first project was car noise modeling for a European automotive company, followed by an optimized industrial planner for a manufacturing company.

Within a national consortium, within the SIIMA platform, we created an institutional orchestrator with anomaly detection and open source micro-services.

AI FERODATA, a winning project of Innovation Norway, uses recurrent networks and GIS analysis to predict energy consumption and parking times of over a hundred locomotives.

Living Lab, implemented in partnership with UMF Iași, monitors patients and recommends interventions, using CNN models and reinforcement learning algorithms.

The PLISS platform supports epidemic management through STEM simulations and predictive notifications, and the GreenChain solution guarantees the integrity of doctoral theses through the Solana blockchain and consensus algorithms.

For hospitals, we developed a project called SpeechToText, which transcribes clinical records, with the aim of improving document completion time.
