HRIA – One Year of Strategic Development and the Next Steps in Building Romania’s AI Ecosystem

On March 10, 2026, The Romanian Hub for Artificial Intelligence (HRIA) celebrated its first anniversary by hosting the workshop “HRIA: Results, Collaborations and Perspectives After the First Year of Implementation”, held in the Senate Hall of the National University of Science and Technology POLITEHNICA Bucharest. The event marked a key moment for assessing the project’s scientific and technological progress, bringing together representatives from academia, the high tech industry, and public institutions.

In its first year, HRIA has strengthened its position as a mature, European recognized ecosystem where universities and companies collaborate to develop intelligent solutions with direct impact on the economy and society.

In her opening remarks, Prof. Adina Florea, PhD, HRIA Project Director, emphasized Romania’s strategic potential in the field of artificial intelligence: “Romania has a tremendous competitive advantage in several areas where artificial intelligence can act as a particle accelerator. HRIA represents a mature AI ecosystem in which Romania is becoming not only a place where ideas are implemented, but a true innovation hub. One year after launch, I dare to look ahead and believe that, four years from now, AI made in Romania will stand as a solid emblem for our nation.”

The workshop showcased several outstanding solutions. One example is the development of the AI Hospital concept — a hospital where physicians work alongside AI components to treat more patients, faster and with greater accuracy. Another important solution is an AI system capable of predicting potential landslide risks based on collected data. Also noteworthy is an application dedicated to neuromotor recovery for stroke patients experiencing difficulty moving their arms — a remarkable solution that personalizes rehabilitation exercises according to each patient’s needs. The hub’s stated goal is to develop at least 30 pilot projects — prototypes that can later be transferred to the market.

Throughout this first year, HRIA has focused on strategic domains where Romania has the capacity to excel:

  • Health and medicine, through AI systems that support physicians in diagnosis
  • Smart cities and environment, with technologies for traffic management, energy consumption, and air quality monitoring
  • Autonomous systems and robotics
  • Security and space, with emphasis on data protection and aerospace technologies
  • Trustworthy AI, essential for developing ethical and transparent algorithms

The workshop included presentations from partner universities and companies, strategic discussions, and brainstorming sessions dedicated to identifying future development directions. In parallel, the Technology Showcase area offered participants the opportunity to see AI applications in action through prototypes and interactive demonstrations created by project partners.
